Where Medics Make the Most. Economist, Jan 31, 2015.
www.economist.com/news/united-st ... re-medics-make-most

Note:
(a) Economist says, "Rural medics make more [see (d)(iv) below] * * * a doctor of general medicine in New York typically earns 64% less than his peer in Alabama. The lowest pay is in Massachusetts."  The source, disclosed by the map, is Doximity.
(b) "Doximity is an online social networking service for US physicians. Launched in March 2011"  Wikipedia
(c)  Doximity website allows members only. However I manage to locate its press release:

Doximity Helps Physicians Navigate their Careers with First-Ever Local Compensation Map; Career Navigator tracks salaries across 48 physician specialties by county. Doximity, Jan 15, 2015.
www.prnewswire.com/news-releases ... -map-300026248.html
(i) The map caption in the pres release clearly indicated "salaries for general surgeons." contrary to that in Economist.com ("Doctor's pay[:] Internal medicine pracioners, 2014").  On the same map. Besides I have searched through press releases o Doximity within www.prnewswire.com, and this press release is the only one about doctor's pay.
(ii) Pres release stated, "Physicians in rural areas see an average of $1,500 more in salary each year compared to those in urban areas."  That is not much in absolute term (though things are cheaper in rural areas, which magnifies the pay gap), considering the average pay (see (d)(i)).
(iii) Press release averred, "Internists working in private practice make an estimated 12 percent (or $28,000) more than those working in academic or government institutions." This is borne out in labor statistics (see (d)(ii)).

(d) 29-1063 Internists, General. In Occupational Employment and Wages. US Department of Labor, May 2013.
www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes291063.htm
(i) "Employment estimate [46,410 nationwide, 'not include self-employed workers'] and mean wage estimates for this occupation": Mean hourly wage: $90.60;  Mean annual wage: $188,440)
(ii) Industries with the highest levels of employment in this occupation [table]:

Industry ..........................................................Employment .............Annual mean wage
Offices of Physicians        ........................................30,810 .....................$206,660
* * *
General Medical and Surgical Hospital ................11,900 .....................$147,890
* * *
Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools ......810 .......................$83,580

(iii) States with the highest employment level in this occupation [table]:

.............................Employment ..........Annual mean wage
California ...............5,790 ....................$197,060
Michigan ................5,550 ...................$120,660
Texas ....................3,880 ...................$202,280
Florida ...................3,530 ...................$205,050
Massachusetts .......3,080 ...................$207,140

* But in 2010 census, population of California and that of Massachusetts were 37,253,956 and 6,547,629, respectively.

(iv) One map had the heading: "Annual mean wage of internists, general, by state, May 2013."
(A) In contrast, Doximity is by "county."
(B) Indeed rural states, in Rocky mountains--plus Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, Alabama and Louisiana--earn more for internists residing there.
