My comment:
(a) Few in Taiwan heard of 白崇禧 (1893-1966). When we did, it was only when it mentioned he was 白先勇’s father. Born in 1937, 白先勇 is 78 years old. I wonder how much the younger 白 really knows about his father and the war against Japan --after all, when the war was over in 1945, 白先勇 was just eight years old.
(b) But it is likely he knew a thing or two about the issues in the quotation. I do not know who said them first (though I just did a mini-research just now -- none of what I read was scholarly).  I certainly have not read  any of Mao’s Thoughts.
