("In recent years, more immigrants from China have been granted U.S. asylum than from any other country. According to federal statistics, asylum was given to more than 27,000 Chinese between 2011 and 2013, representing more than one third of all cases; Egypt had the second-most with about 7,300")

Quote:

"DEFINING 'REFUGEE' AND 'ASYLUM' STATUS * * *  An applicant for refugee status is outside the United States, while an applicant seeking asylum status is in the United States or at a US port of entry." page 1

[Table 3 in page 3 shows China is not in top ten as to refugee arrivals to US ("arrival" or "admission" occurs only when US grants refugee visa).]

Table 6 of page 6 shows (successful) asylees, where the text (at page 6) stated, "In 2013, the leading countries of nationality of persons granted either affirmative or defensive asylum were China (34 percent [number: 8,604 -- compared with total: 25.199), Egypt (14 percent), Ethiopia (3.5 percent), Nepal (3.4 percent), and Syria (3.2 percent) (see Table 6)."  Earlier at page 4: "Asylum may be obtained in one of three ways: affirmatively through a USCIS asylum officer, defensively in removal proceedings before an immigration judge of the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) of the Department of Justice, or an individual may derive asylum status as the spouse or child of an asylee."

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is within US Department of Homeland Security.
