(a) The story broke:

Rob Hayes, ABC7 Exclusive: Error Sends Jet from LAX into Flight Path of Other Plane. KABC-TV, Dec 19, 2016 (9:07pm, local time)

Note: there is no need to read the text at all, which carries no illustration.
(b) FAA will investigate the incident (which takes time), but its spokesman gave a brief account.

FAA Investigating Jetliner's Turn in Wrong Direction. San Diego: CBS8.com, Dec 20, 2016 (Google: "1 hour ago;" it's 8pm, EST, Dec 20)
http://www.cbs8.com/story/341012 ... -in-wrong-direction
("involving a San Diego [not LA, as many news reports incorrectly reported at the beginning] air traffic controller who sent a jetliner in the wrong direction.  It happened Friday [Dec 16] when the controller told the pilot of an EVA Airways Boeing 777 air flight to turn left instead of right after taking off from LAX.  'At the time, aircraft were departing from LAX to the east,' the FAA's Ian Gregor said.  The 777's flight crew switched from the LAX control tower to the approach control in San Diego right after takeoff, Gregor explained [no transcript available, including FAA website]")

Note:
(i) This report does not have the benefit FAA briefing (see (1)) so does not know what went wrong. But the report compiles valuable illustrations, including the 2-D and 3-D flight path of EVA15, the surrounding terrain, another aircraft (Air Canada 788) and, at the bottom, an unofficial transcript between air traffic control and EVA15.
(ii) In the transcript, The crucial portions are as followed:

"(hand over to departure [ie, to "SoCal Departure," from "LAX Tower"] about 2 minutes later)

"SoCal Departure: „(unreadable)..180, climb and maintain 7,000.„ [obviously asking EVA15 to turn left, an instruction EVA15 repeats next]
EVA 15: „Left heading 180 (south), climb and maintain 7,000 EVA 15 heavy.„
EVA 15:“EVA 15 heavy, request high speed climb.„
SoCal Departure: „EVA 15 heavy, affirmative approved as requested.„
EVA 15: „Approved, EVA 015 heavy.„
SoCal Departure: „..turn right, turn heading 180.„ [discovering its own error]
(iii) "SoCal Departure" means Southern California TRACON
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_California_TRACON
("The Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (SCT) (radio callsign: Socal Approach/Departure) is located in San Diego * * * It is the busiest air traffic facility in the world. * * * SCT serves the following major airports (In order of volume, Class B & C), as well as many surrounding satellite airports[:] Los Angeles International Airport - LAX - Los Angeles, CA [> > ]")
