(book review on Julie Powell, Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and
Obsession. Little, Brown (2009))

My comment:
(1) Julie Powell wrote the book Julie and Julia.
(2) Jack the Ripper
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_the_Ripper
("Because the killer's identity was never confirmed, the legends surrounding
the murders have become a combination of genuine historical research,
folklore, and pseudohistory.")
(3) The review refers to a slaughter scene. Apparently Americans, like Jews
and Arabs but unlike Taiwanese, do not save blood for consumption.
(4) Definitions from www.m-w.com:
(a) truss (n): "an assemblage of members (as beams) forming a rigid
framework"

An illustration of truss:
http://www.
classictruss.com/roof_truss_facts.asp

(b) gunk (n): "filthy, sticky, or greasy matter"
(c) For "argyle socks," see

Argyle (pattern)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argyle_(pattern)
("The argyle pattern is derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyll
in western Scotland.")

(5) Please note that the book--and the review--contains a "sado-masochistic
affair." Adult content.
