(world’s largest glass industry: its 2009 output was six times as America's; Now the Chinese industry is ascending the technology ladder)

My comment:
(a) The report says, "Glassmaking is a rare ancient craft with limited history in China."

(i) A Brief History of Glass.
http://www.glassonline.com/infoserv/history.html

"The earliest man-made glass objects, mainly non-transparent glass beads, are thought to date back to around 3500 BC, with finds in Egypt and Eastern Mesopotamia.

"Roman glass has even been found as far afield as China, shipped there along the silk routes.

"It was the Romans who began to use glass for architectural purposes, with the discovery of clear glass (through the introduction of manganese oxide) in Alexandria around AD 100. Cast glass windows, albeit with poor optical qualities, thus began to appear in the most important buildings in Rome and the most luxurious villas of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

(ii) Ancient Chinese glass
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Chinese_glass

Quote:

"Literary sources date the first manufacture of glass to the 5th century AD. However, the earliest archaeological evidence for glass manufacture in China comes from the late Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC to 221BC).

"Imported glass objects first reached China during the late Spring and Autumn period – early Warring States period (early 5th century BC), in the form of polychrome ‘eye beads’. These imports created the impetus for the production of indigenous glass beads.

In 2006 it purchased Pilkington of the United Kingdom. This makes NSG/Pilkington one of the four largest glass companies in the world alongside with another Japanese company Asahi Glass, Saint-Gobain, and Guardian Industries Corp..

* 硝子 is pronounced "garasu" in Japan.
