(PAA) to defending Europe and the U.S. against an ICBM threat from Iran.
PAA replaced the George W. Bush administration’s so-called Third Site
program, which encountered strenuous opposition from Russia.

"Third Site included placing a midcourse tracking radar in the Czech
Republic and 10 long-range interceptor missiles in Poland. PAA is a staged
approach based primarily on the ship-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense
System, which uses Raytheon’s SM-3 interceptor.
