Chinese tourists  l  A new Grand Tour; China’s tourists are carving out a new European itinerary, with some unexpected stops. Economist, Dec 16, 2010.

"Paris shops such as Louis Vuitton are essential stops: witness their Mandarin-speaking staff.

"It is a standing joke among Chinese travellers that many products snapped up abroad bear 'Made in China' labels. But there is some sense to this seeming madness. Thanks to hefty taxes and customs duties, European brands are routinely 40% more expensive back home. In China they are also quite likely to be fakes.

My comment:

("O.E. Grontabricc (c.745) 'Bridge on the River Granta' (a Celtic river name, of obscure origin). The change to Cante- and later Cam- was due to Norman influence. The river name Cam is a back formation in this case, but Cam also was a legitimate Celtic river name, meaning 'crooked.'")

* OE stands for Old English.
* The noun bridge is derived from brycg in OE.
* Cambridge, Massachusetts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge,_Massachusetts
(first houses were built in the spring of 1631; The settlement was initially referred to as "the newe towne"; Official Massachusetts records show the name capitalized as Newe Towne by 1632; In 1636, Harvard College was founded by the colony to train ministers; By 1638, the name "Newe Towne" had "compacted by usage into 'Newtowne'"; In May 1638 the name was changed to Cambridge in honor of the university in Cambridge, England)
* The quote above mentions "Cante-."

Cambridge, Mass., still has in its seal the Latin name Cantabridia. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Cantabrigia

(Cambridgeshire: Cambridge was previously known as Grantbridge (OE Grantanbrycg), meaning Bridge on the River Granta. There is a reference in Gildas to Caer Grawnt indicating an earlier Brythonic origin. The name of the city became Cambridge due to the Norman influence within the city in the 12th century. The name of the river Cam within Cambridge is a backwards derivation.)

(ii) This article was most shocking to me. When I was in junior high school in Taiwan (equivalent to middle school in US), I learned of this guy and title of the poem. Almost everybody in Taiwan heard of the first verse of the poem 9and nothing else). I did not discuss with others, for it was so obvious to me: I always thougth the Cabridge in the poem referred to the one in Massachusetts (and that he visited in Harvard)!  It never occur to me that it could be the one in England. For decades, I alwyas wondered why those Chinese who came to US in the turn of Twentieth century never mentioned racial discrimination, such as if they might had to use a bath room or toilet for blacks or colored people.
(c) punt (n): "a long narrow flat-bottomed boat with square ends usually propelled with a pole"

All definitions are from www.m-w.com.

For me, until I read this article the only meaning of punting was from (American) football.
