(1) Jens Kastner, Taiwan Subs Plan Tests the Waters. Asia Times, June 1, 2011 (available now).
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/China/MF01Ad01.html

Quote:

"Yet building diesel-electric subs is not a small matter, and countries that have the expertise to do so are few. South Korea, certainly ahead of Taiwan in terms of mechanical engineering, had three brand-new boats out of service for much of 2010 because its engineers didn't get some bolts right.

"'After Taiwan has lost air and sea control, it's the subs that will still be able to attack groups of amphibious landing craft,' said Wang [Jyh-perng, a Taiwanese researcher].

"If Taiwan were to get subs, they could become an annoyance to Japanese and US armed forces in their daily routine. In January, Tokyo Shimbun reported that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's most prominent mission had become stepping up surveillance in waters labelled as the 'TGT triangle,' a maritime area that covers Tokyo, Guam and Taiwan, to track intrusions of China's submarine fleet, already consisting of not fewer than 65 vessels. 'What the US and Japan really aren't short of is a few Taiwanese subs bobbing up and down there, making surveillance even more complicated,' a US defense expert told Asia Times Online on condition of anonymity.

My comment:
(a) Regarding quotation 2. Imagine China destroys all military infrastructure of Taiwan, how can a  submarine fleet, if Taiwan does has one, be supplied or repaired?
(b) Reagrding quotation 3. I have thought Japan will get involved as a supplier or, at most, a rearguard.

Quote:

"Japan Airlines will be the first carrier to fly the 787 out of Logan International Airport when service starts here in April [next year].

"Other planes can’t make the 13 1/2-hour flight efficiently from Logan because its 10,000-foot runways aren’t long enough to allow those aircraft to take off fully loaded with passengers, cargo, and enough fuel to make the journey nonstop. 'We don’t have the mega runways that Kennedy offers. They can launch nonstops out of Kennedy to just about any destination in the world, fully loaded,’ said Edward Freni, director of aviation for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Logan.

Boeing 787 "is expected to be delivered to its first airline, All Nippon Airways Co., in August or September.

My comment:
(a) This article is the first of a series.
(b) See the graphic, which shows fewer and fewer American deaths as a result of improvised explosive device (IED).
(c) Go to web page 4 and read the section with the heading "Humble and eager to learn" to see how the embryonic form of Iraq Air Force is whipped into shap.
