(1) Steven Erlanger, Confusing Goals Complicate an Effort to Forge a Trans-Atlantic Trade Deal. New York Times, June 13, 2013.

(European Union's push for rapid Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, faces long odds)

Quote:

"For a European Union weakened by the euro crisis, the view is taking hold that the best way to compete with Asia’s inevitable growth is to forge a stronger partnership with the United States, which has its own anxieties about Chinese competition.

"United States was trying to negotiate a similar deal, known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership [TPP], with Asian countries and especially with Japan. China is not included in those negotiations, which the Obama administration considers a higher, more immediate priority than the European talks.  Given already low average tariffs (under 3 percent), the main problems [with EU] are nontariff barriers, things like differing customs and regulatory requirements. * * * They [US and EU] differ on how to ensure the safety of chicken — the Europeans do not allow the import of American chicken that has been chlorinated to kill bacteria.

Note: The  German and Jewish surname Erlanger denotes a person from Erlangen in Bavaria.

(2) The current issue (cover date: June 17, 2013) of Time magazine has a cover story:

Hannah Beech, How China Sees the World. Under an assertive new ruler, Beijing wants to be treated like a world power. But many of Xi Jinping's own people are not so sure about his China Dream ("Art by Ai WeiWei").

My comment:
(a) The article's URL shows the cover.

(i) Ai Weiwei Talks About His Cover Art for TIME Magazine. Time, June 9, 2013 (according to YouTube.com).

(ii) I was impressed by his English, but it turns out that "[f]rom 1981 to 1993, he lived in the United States, mostly in New York."

(b) The page preceding the story shows a dragon chasing a fireball, in the format of paper cutting, presumably also by Mr Ai. I can not find this particular one in the Web.
(c) There is no need to read the article (which requires payment anyway), which does not say anything new.

(3) David Sanger, 习奥会能让中美抛弃冷战思维吗?  纽约时报中文网, June 13, 2013
http://cn.nytimes.com/world/20130613/c13summit/

, which is translated from

David Sanger, Xi and Obama See Pitfalls That Might Be Difficult to Avoid; Cordiality and progress, with flashes of nationalism. New York Times, June 10, 2013.

Quote:

"American intelligence officials have told Mr. Obama that the cyberattacks on American companies emanating from China, which have swept up billions of dollars’ worth of intellectual property, are caused by the increasing desperation inside China to keep its economy growing at 7 or 8 percent a year. Chinese leaders consider that rate necessary to create enough jobs for the millions of young Chinese who flock to the coastal manufacturing centers each year.

"That [first creating a relationship and a tone] might be a lesson from Mr Obama’s dealings with the Chinese leadership during his first term. He began in 2009 by making it clear to Hu Jintao, Mr Xi’s predecessor, that the United States was not seeking to contain Chinese power; Mr. Obama said in a speech delivered on his first trip to China that the United States could not do so even if it tried. The speech was part of a careful effort to reassure the Chinese that the United States was willing to make room for a new superpower, as long as it played by international rules. For a while, there was talk of a 'G-2,' an economic collaboration between the largest- and second-largest economies in the world.  That talk evaporated quickly. By 2010, China’s military had made it clear that it viewed Mr. Obama’s overture as an expression of American weakness. * * * Mr. Obama angrily told aides that he needed 'leverage' over the Chinese, according to several officials.

Note: This report (English-language one at any rate) was written in the wake of the Sunnylands talk.
