Quote:
"Apple is said to be developing a touchscreen tablet without a keyboard as its answer to netbooks. Steve Jobs, its chief executive, talks disdainfully about netbooks and is nothing if not obstinate.
"I doubt whether he can avoid making a MacBook Net. Microsoft, Intel, Dell and others tried to resist the netbook imperative and failed. Consumers have spoken, no matter how much Mr Jobs dislikes what they are saying.
My comment:
(a) IDC published its Q2 estimate on July 16, 2009, so columnist John Gapper could not possibly read the IDC report.
(b) The columnist probably did not read Gardner report, either. I checked at noon time (Eastern Daylight Time), July 16, and did not find the report. So Gadner release its report later that day. But Financial Times has an earlier deadline than American newspapers, as the former is based in London, which is hours agead of American Eastern seaboard.
)c) For PC shipment of Q2, 2009 in US market, Gardner estimates Apple gained 2.5% whereas IDC has it (Apple) registered -17.4% compared with the same period a year ago. In any event, even if Apple wants to enter netbook market now, it may be too late.
