My comment:
(a) My attention was drawn to the photograph in the print (and online as
well).

(i) Amanfayun (22 Fayun Nong, Xihujiedao)
安缦法云 (杭州西湖风景名胜区)西湖街道法云弄22号

(ii) Turns out Amanresorts (headquartered at Singapore) operates it as well
as one in Beijing.

the palace and a village

I am not familiar with Beijing. Summer Palace
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_Palace
(颐和园; in Beijing)

(b) Obviously the monks in the publicity photograph are staged. The entire
village is now owned by the hospitality group.
(c) The author apparently had a maiden name Amy Farris (Farris is a variant of Scottish last name Fergus) who is married to a Chinese named Shi (石,史,施?)
(d) There is a slide show of Amanfayun in Concierge.com.
