Quentin Hardy, In Battle Over Dell, a Founder Hopes to Reclaim His Legacy. New York Times, July 15, 2013

("Though his [Michael Dell's] namesake company revolutionized the PC business, it missed the consumer shift to smartphones and tablets, and also missed the move of corporate computing to data centers and cloud-based networks")
My comment:
(a) There is no need to read the rest.
(b) Taiwanese cherish small- and medium-sized businesses, for 船小好掉頭 (as Taiwanese like to say). These businesses spot the trend earlier than big corporations. It is now well known that Dell, Microsoft and Intel missed the boat for mobil devices, but the NYT report reminds us that Dell also could not transform itself into a powerhouse for servers as well as mobile devices, televisions etc. Presence of EMC Corporation (head and shoulder above the rest in computer storage and based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb) is keenly felt in Boston; I hope Taiwan someday can do something about it (storage). |
