"Despite relentless march of credit card, debit cards and mobile payments, Americans wrote 17.3 billion checks in 2015, according to a survey released by Federal Reserve last month. That compares with the 41.9 billion checks written in 2000 when the Fed started conducting the survey, which it does every three years.

"Transactions involving checks typically takes 67 seconds to complete, compared with 25 seconds for cash, 24 seconds for credit cards and 20 seconds for debit cards, says Lori Fontaine, an industrial engineer who works with retailers.  'After they write the check, then they start digging around for their driver's license,' she says.
