Pres. Ma's English and his agility to reply.

(1) Most likely he did not know the questions in advance.

One of the ethical standard in US news media is never let interviewee(s)
know what the questions may be. If interviewee insists of knowing the
questions beforehand, the interview will not be live but in written form ("
send in questionaire and we will send back answers").

(2) I often wonder how he could be (a) English interpreter for Pres. Chiang
Ching-kuo and (b) speak fluent (but correctly pronounced) English.

Ma got his bachelor of law degree from National Taiwan University in 1972.*

He entered the compulsory military service for two year.

So he was in US from 1974 to 1981 only (seven years).

* In Taiwan a high school graduate enters law school and after four years --
five years in Soochow University (東吳大學; 1954~; at City of Taipei)--
receives a bachelor's. It is different from American system.


(3) There was this American old lady who retired, went to Taiwan, taught
English there and in her spare time charged Taiwanese for English
conversation. I encountered her by chance. For years, I had stand invitation
to visit her anytime and without payment. And I read Time magazine a year
in Taiwan. Still when I came to US, for a year I had a hard time completing
a sentence!

I have been in US for a quarter century. In the first decade, my ability to
speak English fluctuated (like others). Afterwards, my English stabilized.

Though I do not see eyes to eys with Pres. Ma Ying-jeou in almost every
aspect, I nonetheless admire his English--and his ability to answer
aggressive questions thrown upon him. (This CNN interview is the first time
I see how he answers questions in this format, though I observed twice--live
--his Q & A at the end of his talks, both at Harvard University--the first
in English to general audience and the second in Mandarin to Chinese
speakers (nominally Taiwanese).)

My comment: Maybe I am unrealistic, but I have always thought Taiwan can
defend itself alone. And I really love Americans; I simply do not think they
should die for Taiwan--though few will die in a naval and/or air battles (
as opposed to land war with China). Still I am taken aback by the ferocity
and reasons DPP lambastes Pres. Ma. Probably he is surprised, too.

My comment: This is ridiculous. China has 河蟹. I thought that was because
Chinese did not have freedom of speech (or maybe Chinese just do not want to
write things formally or correctly, such as 美眉). Why should Taiwanese
have a hidden agenda in pictures or words? Taiwan is a democracy. Certain
Taiwanese just overanalyze.
