Scotch plaid is a noun. It is extremely rare to use it as a verb. Besides this WSJ report, the only one that can be found in the web is Oliver Wendell Holmes, The autocrat of the breakfast-table: every man his own Boswell. 1858.

The speculation is the verb means different colors intertwine to form a pattern or theme (Tartan in Scotland represents a clan).
