(b) Speaking on background or being quoted unnamed is not really reliable. In any event, I do not think something like this is intereference with another nation.
(c) Most important, most people do not think foreign interference works in a domestic election.
(i) Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek failed miserable in the 1948 US presidential election. To his chagrin, Truman was re-elected.
(ii) US tried but Daniel Ortega eventually won (again) in the Nov 5, 2006 presidential election of Nicaragua.
