(1) Press release: Gartner Says Worldwide PC Shipments Declined 5 Per Cent in Second Quarter of 2009. Gartner, July 16, 2009.
http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1076912

(2) Press release: PC Outlook Improves As Consumer Spending Stabilizes Shipments, According to IDC. IDC, July 15, 2009.
http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS21930609

Summary:
(a) Both marketing firms compared Q2, 2009 with the same period a year ago. By units shipped rather than by revenues.

(b) For each pair of figures, the first one is from Gartner, followed by a slash(/) and then followed by a second number from IDC.

---------------worldwide----------------------------------US
--------market--------% change --------------market--------% change
--------share (%)-----from Q2, 2008----------share (%)-----from Q2, 2008

Dell----13.6/13.7----- -17.0/-17.1-----------31.6/31.4----- -18.7/-18.9
Acer----13.5/12.7----- 34.2/23.7-------------8.0/8.1------- 74.2/51.0

Lenovo had a miniscule gain in worldwide market share, about 2%.

My comment: Dell spent a lot in the last two quarters on advertisement when I started paying attention to its ad campaign--but Acer spent little. I am surprised by the sale data.

------------Separately
Face value: Upwardly mobile; Peter Chou wants to turn HTC, which used to
make mobile phones for other firms, into a brand in its own right.

John Gapper, Little laptops snap at the oligopoly. Financial Times, July 16, 2009.

Quote:

"Apple is said to be developing a touchscreen tablet without a keyboard as its answer to netbooks. Steve Jobs, its chief executive, talks disdainfully about netbooks and is nothing if not obstinate.

"I doubt whether he can avoid making a MacBook Net. Microsoft, Intel, Dell and others tried to resist the netbook imperative and failed. Consumers have spoken, no matter how much Mr Jobs dislikes what they are saying.

My comment:
(a) IDC published its Q2 estimate on July 16, 2009, so columnist John Gapper could not possibly read the IDC report.
(b) The columnist probably did not read Gardner report, either. I checked at noon time (Eastern Daylight Time), July 16, and did not find the report. So Gadner release its report later that day. But Financial Times has an earlier deadline than American newspapers, as the former is based in London, which is hours agead of American Eastern seaboard.
)c) For PC shipment of Q2, 2009 in US market, Gardner estimates Apple gained 2.5% whereas IDC has it (Apple) registered -17.4% compared with the same period  a year ago. In any event, even if Apple wants to enter netbook market now, it may be too late.
