Note:
(a) Pay attention to Figure 2 at page 403 that showed that US population (31.4 million; 1860) was slightly larger than that of UK (28.9m; 1861 whereas in US (82m; 1890) had almost twice the population of UK (45.2; 1891).
(b) “Coincident full census have taken place in the different jurisdictions of the United Kingdom every ten years since 1801, with the exceptions of 1941 (during World War II) and in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State [now Republic of Ireland] in 1921 [Irish War of Independence (1919-1921)].”

That is why in 1914 the population of Ireland in incorporated into that of UK.
