"Single malts produced in one distillery command a premium for their bold taste and unique origin, whereas blends combine barrels from multiple distilleries to create a more consistent but usually cheaper product. * * * Last year, sales of Scotland-made blended whisky fell 1.3%, while those of similar Japanese whiskies grew by a modest 1.6%, according to wine and spirits database IWSR. By contrast, sales of single-malt whisky made by both countries jumped by 5.2% and 20%, respectively. The retail value of the global whiskey market in 2014 was US$62.1 billion, according to IWSR.

"scarcity of supply has allowed Tasmania’s distillers to charge high prices—typically around double those of Scotch single malts sold in Australia. This year, two 1.5-liter bottles of whisky produced from Sullivans Cove’s distillery near Tasmania’s capital, Hobart, each sold for 10,000 Australian dollars (US$7,100)—about the cost of a pair of Rolex watches.

My comment: You may not be interested in Whiskey, so you need not read the text. This report uses “whisky,” probably reflecting where the report is dispatched: Australia.  American spelling: whiskey.
