Ian King and Debby Wu, Taiwan's TSMC Could Be About to Dethrone Intel. Bloomberg, Nov 28, 2018.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/a ... a-taiwanese-upstart

My comment:
(a) The title is a hyperbole a bit. Dethroning in what area(s)?  Not in the strongholds or revenue, I foresee. I do notice this report says, "TSMC has a real chance to replace Intel as the best chipmaker in the business." So in nm, I guess.  (But if so, Intel was ALREADY dethroned when Samsung first mass-produced 10nm in 2017.)

(b) "Advanced Micro Devices Inc founder Jerry Sanders. "Real men have fabs,' he quipped at a conference * * * Sanders’ current successor at AMD, Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su, doesn’t have to worry about this because the company sold its factories and lets TSMC handle the complex production."
(i) Based in Santa Clara, Calif, "Advanced Micro Devices was formally incorporated on May 1, 1969, by Jerry Sanders, along with seven of his colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor. Sanders, an electrical engineer who was the director of marketing at Fairchild, had, like many Fairchild executives, grown frustrated with the increasing lack of support, opportunity, and flexibility within the company, and decided to leave to start his own semiconductor company. The previous year Robert Noyce, who had invented the first practical integrated circuit or the microchip in 1959 at Fairchild, had left Fairchild together with Gordon Moore and founded the semiconductor company Intel in July 1968."  en.wikipedia.org for "Advanced Micro Devices" (citations omitted).

As a new hire at Texas Instrument Jack Kilby independently invented integrated circuit  in 1958.
(ii) "Real men have" wieners (ie, penises), feelings too, beards, manners (some of what I find in the Web)
(iii) Lisa Su
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Su
(Lisa Tzwu-Fang SU 蘇姿豐 was born in Tainan, Taiwan, in November 1969 to Taiwanese parents Chun-Hwai Su 蘇春槐 and Sandy Su 羅淑雅; emigrated to US around 3; section 5 Personal life)

With BS, MS and PhD (in 1990, 1991 and 1994 (24 1/2 years old), respectively; all in electrical engineering and computer science -- ie, course 6) from MIT. MIT does not have "bachelor of engineering."
當時Dr Tom Su [已经; Tom came alone in 1969 with 清華大學數學碩士學位; Lisa came with mother who then 進紐約市立大學修會計] 在哥倫比亞大學就讀研究院 [PhD in statistics]。Lisa Su旋即入學哥大師院附設的幼稚園及小學。1976年,Tom 搬到Bayside [a neighborhood in Queens, New York City] , Lisa後來就進入附近的小學PS [Public School] 203; 因其成績優異,不久即跳級進入特殊初中(2年制) * * * 鋼琴造詣亦高深。雖曾有機會入茱利葉音樂學院就讀,卻放棄之。 * * * Husband: 林大耀(Daniel Lin)")
(A) About the photo who caption is 全家福. Lisa Su has an elder brother. That is it -- no sister. I assume the left-most woman was Lisa.
(B) Guide: Understanding New York City Schools, New York Public Radio WNYC, undated
https://www.wnyc.org/schoolbook/guides/understanding/
("Which schools serve which grades?
(C) Every New York City school is different and may serve different grades. There are some that serve grades pre-k to 5, while others go up to 8th grade. There are middle schools for grades 6-8 and high schools for 9-12, but also some 6-12 schools. This means a child could attend three different schools between pre-k and high school or just two depending on the grade configuration")

New York City has middle (not junior high) schools.
(D) There is no need to read the rest.

(c) "Renee James, the former No 2 at Intel who heads startup Ampere. Her company is less than two years old and yet it’s going after Intel’s dominant server chip business."
(i) Ampere Computing
https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/ampere_computing
(founded in 2017 by Renee James, who is chairman and CEO; "designed [obviously should be 'designs'] ARM-based server microprocessors;" Headquarters Santa Clara, California)
(ii) Renée James
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renée_James
(1964- ; "James received a bachelor's degree in International Business in 1986 and a Master's of Business Administration in 1992, both from the University of Oregon" / Intel president 2013-2015 when she left) )

(d) "This week, Amazon.com Inc., the biggest cloud-computing company, announced its first in-house server processor. The Graviton is made by TSMC"

It is manifest that this Bloomberg report is on the wake of this announcement:
Jeff Barr, New – EC2 Instances (A1) Powered by Arm-Based AWS Graviton Processors. Amazon, Nov 26, 2018 ("news blog")
https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws ... raviton-processors/
("We acquired Annapurna Labs in 2015 after working with them on the first version of the AWS Nitro System. Since then we’ve worked with them to build and release two generations of ASICs (chips, not shoes) that now offload all EC2 system functions to Nitro, allowing 100% of the hardware to be devoted to customer instances. A few years ago the team started to think about building an Amazon-built custom CPU designed for cost-sensitive scale-out workloads.  Today we are launching EC2 instances powered by Arm-based AWS Graviton Processors. Built around Arm cores and making extensive use of custom-built silicon")
(i) Annapurna Labs (2011- ; based in Haifa, Israel; Amazon acquired for estimated $350-375m)
(ii) Amazon EC2" stands for "Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud."
(iii) "An EC2 instance is a virtual server in Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for running applications on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure."
Margaret Rouse (Whatif.com), Amazon EC2 instance. TechTarget, last updated in 2014.

(e) "The smartphone business is now almost six times as big as the PC industry by volume [ie, by units sold, not by revenue]. That's given TSMC the advantage of high-volume manufacturing experience that previously belonged to Intel."

(f) " 'They're a self-fulfilling prophesy now,' said Debora Shoquist"

It is a typo. In both UK and US, prophesy is a verb and prophecy is a noun. 00 and the last vowel is pronounced differently.
