袁莉, 羡慕、泪水和启发:中国人的台湾观选之旅. 纽约时报中文网, Jan 19, 2024
https://cn.nytimes.com/asia-paci ... lection-china/dual/

, which is translated from

Li Yuan, Taiwan's Votes Inspire activists from China. New York Times, Jan 20, 2024, at page B1.

Note:
(a) "At the Taipei train station, a Chinese human rights activist named Cuicui watched with envy as six young Taiwanese politicians campaigned for the city's legislative seats. A decade ago, they had been involved in parallel democratic protest movements — she in China, and the politicians on the opposite side of the Taiwan Strait."
(i) I am clueless about the identity of the "six young Taiwanese." But the following four fit the bill. You know, City of Taipei is KMT's stronghold. So these four did not volunteer themselves to campaign, Rather, DPP asked them to, starting <ay 31, 2023 (half a year before the election). Only 吴沛忆, a female, succeeded.
(ii) the four:

(C) 台北市立委第4选举区  高嘉瑜 (1980- ; the incumbent 第4选举区 立法委员 (one term of four years) who lost the reelection bid seven dats ago)

(D) 台北市立委第8选举区  王闵生 (1975- )

(b) "Cuicui was one in a group of eight women I followed last week in Taiwan before the Jan. 13 election. Their tour was called “Details of a Democracy” and was put together by Annie Jieping Zhang, a mainland-born journalist who worked in Hong Kong for two decades before moving to Taiwan during the pandemic [zh.wikipedia.org says in 2021]."

张洁平

(c) "As mainlanders searched for an alternative Chinese society, they naturally turned to Taiwan for answers."

American English may use either alternative or alternate as an adjective -- and hence in this context.
alternate (adj): "US  (UK alternative)"
