(a) Quote:
"Costco, Taiwan's only wholesale club chain, has increased its share of the island's fragmented, $71.8 billion-a-year retail market to 1% in 2009 from less than 0.4% in 2004, according to research firm Euromonitor. Its sales during that period almost tripled to $747.2 million from $250 million, while the total market only expanded 8.3%, Euromonitor said.
"Costco, the biggest U.S. club-chain by revenue, has more overseas stores than archrival Sam's Club, owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Third-placed BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. doesn't have any overseas outlets.
"The Taipei store's top bakery item is bagels, which use dough imported from New York. The store sells 54,000 a week.
(b) Note:
(a) Pepperidge Farm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepperidge_Farm
("a commercial bakery in the U.S. founded in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin, who named the brand after her family's property in Fairfield, Connecticut, which in turn was named for the pepperidge tree, Nyssa sylvatica. Since 1961, the company has been owned by the Campbell Soup Company.")
(b) Issaquah, Washington

(Issaquah is an anglicized word for a local Native American name, meaning "the sound of birds")
(c) Hypermarkets 大賣場/量販店 in Taiwan by sales and number of stores in decreasing order: Carrefour; RT Mart 大潤發; A.mart 愛買; and Costco 好市多.
A.Mart (formerly known as Geant)

(c) I am uncertain what it means when the report states Costco is "Taiwan's only wholesale club chain." Other hyperstore chains also offer membership--free or not I do not know. (But RT Mart appears to charge membership.)
