Adam Baidawi, A Surgeon Returns Home to Help War's Amputees. New York Times, July 29, 2017 (in the weekly column "The Saturday Profile").
Quote:
"Dr Munjed al-Muderis * * * an Iraqi-Australian orthopedic surgeon was back [visiting from Sydney, Australia] in his hometown [Baghdad] for the first time since he escaped in 1999 after being ordered to cut off the earlobes of army deserters. He had come at the personal behest of Iraq's prime minister, Haider al-Abadi
There in Baghdad: "He was looking for candidates for osseointegration, a surgical procedure that eschews the centuries-old approach of fitting a socket over a stump. Instead, the doctor drill titanium rods [permanently] into the remaining bone and attach them to advanced prostheses, creating more dynamic limbs. The technique originated with tooth implants, and Dr Muderis has helped pioneer its uses on arms and legs
"Dr Muderis, scion of one of Baghdad's nine original ruling families, escaped a brutal regime only to what he described as a dehumanizing asylum system in Australia. Now he lives in a harborside mansion in Sydney and drives an Aston Martin to a private hospital
My comment: Dental implant is quite established, considered better than a denture. But the osseointegration is new. So its advantages and drawbacks, only time will tell. For this reason, there is no need to read the rest.
