Richard Sandomir, Gin Wong, Designer of Futuristic Buildings in Los Angeles, Dies at 94; An architect of ultramodern designs, even for a gas station. New York Times, Sept 19, 2017
("died on Sept 1 in Beverly Hills")
Quote:
"Gin Dan Wong was born on Sept 17, 1922, in Guangzhou, China, and moved to Los Angeles with an aunt at age 9. He was later joined by his mother, Ng Pui King, and his sister, Wong Kam Chung. His father died before Mr Wong immigrated to the United States.
"While running Mr Pereira’s company [Los Angeles-based William L Pereira & Associates] in the late 1960s, Mr Wong oversaw the design of the Transamerica Pyramid, the striking 853-foot-tall building that pierces the sky in San Francisco. Mr Wong said that Jack Beckett, the chairman of Transamerica, gave him straightforward direction. 'His first statement was, "I want to make sure that everybody in the financial world knows who we are," ' Mr Wong recalled in a video made by Neil Healy, his son-in-law. The general public, he added, understood that the building was making a statement.

(a) There is no need to read the rest.
(b) Gin D Wong (1950 B Arch University of Southern California; at William L Pereira & Associates, Wong became a "designer, then director of design, and eventually president") en.wikipedia.org
(c) In the web, designer of Transamerica Pyramid *construction began in 1969; moving in in 1972) is said to be William Pereira.
(d) TransAmerica Corp at some point (I can not find out when) moved the headquarters from Pyramid to Baltimore, Maryland, where it remains. In 1999, however, Transamerica was acquired by Aegon, headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands.
"Transamerica pulls out of California" Sacramento Bees reported last year. It goes without saying that the Corporation has no presence in Pyramid -- except the building name.
