In Hualien earthquake, 17 persons died, nine of whom were Chinese tourists (including a three-generation family of five in Room 201 of 雲門翠堤大樓, where one of whose bodies has not been located) and a Filipina named Melody Albano Castro (age 28, caretaker).

大久保淑珉 (a Taiwanese woman with maiden name 林 who adopted her husband's family name) and her husband 大久保忠雄 lived in one room (702) and her younger brother 林英明 (中风 patient who has problem moving or speaking) lived next door (7樓之1 or 701) with his caretaker Melody Albano Castro 美樂蒂 -- in the same building that slanted during the earthquake. When rescuers removed 林英明 from his room, 林英明 cried out and pointed inside the room for Melody, but rescuers could not comprehend him. Two days later in the afternoon of Feb 8, her body was retried ("身体被压在 [床脚] 衣柜内").
