Chico Harlan, Washington Nationals sign Chien-Ming Wang to pitching staff.
Washington Post, Feb. 20, 2010.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/19/AR2010021904959.html

Quote:

"They [Nationals in DC] added him at a relative bargain -- $2 million for
2010, plus up to $3 million in incentives -- because other ballclubs aren't
so sure.

"The Nationals lost 103 games last year, worst in baseball. Wang, before the
season-ending shoulder injury, went 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA, highest among all
452 big leaguers who threw at least 25 innings last year. (Second-poorest
was Washington's Logan Kensing, 8.92.)

Note:
(a) Earned run average
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earned_run_average
(the mean of earned runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings pitched;
determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of
innings pitched and multiplying by nine)

The higher the ERA, the worst the pitcher.

(b) After a year in Yankee of New York City, Mr. Wang was released. Now he
comes to Nationals.

Quote:

"One of her most notable scholarly achievements was an innovative study of
19th century Chinese American prostitutes, "Free, Indentured, and Enslaved:
Chinese Prostitutes in 19th Century America," published in 1979 in the
journal Signs.

"Challenging a widely held belief that all Chinese prostitutes were slaves,
she offered the example of a 20-year-old Hong Kong woman who within two
years of her arrival in 1848 made enough money to buy a brothel that served
a non-Chinese clientele. The woman later retired from the business and
married a wealthy Chinese man.

Angeles Times, Feb. 11, 2010 (blog).

("There is artwork from all over the world here. This picture shows artwork
from Taiwan.")

My comment:
(a) The quotation is the only in the blog that deals with Taiwan.
(b) The writer is a daughter of a reporter.
