The negative correlation works best for the topleft quarter, which are mostly Catholic or non-Christian nations. If only considering Christian nations where Catholics are not dominant  (US, South Korea, Canada, Germany, Britain, etc), the negative correlation becomes much less significant and US does not  appear to be an outlier.  

PS. I have very bad impression of the quality of his articles in the past.

"His" means Blow's?

But his conclusion seemed to copied from Gallup. In other words, I faulted him for not bring up his own original idea.
