(1) John Pomfret, Gates to meet with a Chinese military that's grown bolder.
Washington Post, Jan. 8, 2011.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/07

Quote:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates "he will discover a Chinese military that has
significantly changed in the 31/2 years since he last visited Beijing. It's
not so much that the People's Liberation Army has achieved stunning
successes since Gates met with its officers in 2007 * * * More than anything
, the PLA has taken on a different tone. Emboldened by the notion that China
's rise is unstoppable, its military has shed its traditional secrecy to
become a brash, even boisterous interest group that openly advocates for
policies, brandishes its new equipment and makes other claims like never
before.

"At the Zhuhai Airshow in November, senior defense industry officials made
claims that China can now manufacture engines for its jet fighters. But
there's no sign that that's the case. Indeed, the firm that makes the
engines, Aviation Industries of China, canceled two news conferences on that
topic.

Note: For Aviation Industries of China, see Aviation Industry Corporation of
China (AVIC; state-owned, headquartered in Beijing) 中国航空工业集团公司 (
简称“中航工业”)

(2) Gregory Kulacki and David Wright, Letter to editor: A gross exaggeration
of China's missile capabilities. Washington Post, Jan. 7, 2011.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/07

Quote:

"The Pentagon estimates that China has fewer than 50 long-range missiles.
The United States, by comparison, has more than 700. After three decades of
development, China has deployed only 15 of its new mobile strategic missiles
, and none of them can carry multiple warheads. That's because China's
smallest tested nuclear warhead is far too heavy for the missiles to
accommodate more than one.

My comment: I assume the difference between 700 and 15 is that the rest are
silo-based.

(3) Despite an alleged leaked video clip showing a J-20 in the air (seconds-
long and grainly), no English-language report (from China or the West) has
emerged about the so called first test flight--or the plane itself in the
last 24 hours.

http://www.voanews.com/chinese/news/20110108-US-ASIA-GATES-1131

My coment:
(a) What the heck is 敲山镇虎?

Taiwan does not have this phrase. I google and find 打草惊蛇,敲山镇虎,以待蛇窜虎扑,唯恐无所措手足.
(b) Luckily, the report is translated from

Al Pessin, US Defense Chief Visits China at Crucial Juncture. VOA, Jan. 7, 2011.
http://www.voanews.com/english/news/asia/US-Defense-Chief-Visit
("The president of the Progressive Policy Institute, Will Marshall, says China’s recent behavior is cause for concern. 'This doesn’t look like it’s consistent with Chinese officials’ claims that they want to see a "peaceful rise" of their country.  It looks more menacing than that.  And I think it’s time to make that point very clearly and directly. I think they’re pushing and probing here, and now it’s incumbent upon the United States to show that we are not going to be denied access to that part of the world,' he said")
