Quote:

Kenichi Horie "moved to Taiwan two years ago to study Chinese. 'Japanese companies are wasting the young generations to protect older workers,' said Mr. Horie, now 36. 'In Japan, they closed the doors on me. In Taiwan, they tell me I have a perfect résumé.'

"Japan’s news media are now filled with grim accounts of how university seniors face a second “ice age” in the job market, with just 56.7 percent receiving job offers before graduation as of October 2010 — an all-time low.

* My guess: a freeter in Japan is equivalent to a freelancer in US.
* The "arbeiter" is German for "worker" (a male noun)--female noun being arbeiterin.

Re: Frustrated Youth of Japan

The reporter, Mr Fackler, did not compare Japan with US.

A few things in his report apply to America, too. So I thought when I read it.

Today, there is an article that substantiates my suspicions.

Charles M Blow, Hard-Knock (Hardly Acknowledged Life); The poor poor, nary a mention by the president. New York Times, Jan 29, 2011.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/29/opinion/29blow.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=hard-knock&st=cse

My comment:
(a) Just take a look at the table. There is no need to read the article.
(b) hard-knock (adj): "beset with hardship"
Random House Unabridged Dictionary (1997)
(c) Everywhere in the world, young people tend not to vote. Naturally government policies favor older people, especially retirees--because the latter vote faithfully (in part becaus they have time).
(d) Social security in US is going to be bankrupt. But no politician dare come out to talk about it, let alone fix it--for no formula is popular to everybody.
