Dan Saltzstein, Japan Will Build World's Fastest Train. New York Times, Feb 20, 2011 (title in the print; date in the print).

(to be completed by 2027; 178 miles; in 40 minutes; will use magnetic levitation

My comment:
(a) Central Japan Railway is private.
(b) Capital of Aichi Prefecture 愛知県, Nagoya is midway between Osaka in the west and Tokyo in the east.
(c) Maglev (transport)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglev_(transport)
(section 6.2 Operational systems servicing the public:
Linimo (combining the first two words of "linear motor magnetic-levitated train", 愛知県, for Expo 2005, 8.9km;
Shanghai 30km (19mi), 7 min 20 sec;
Daejeon 大田 廣域市, South Korea: for 1993 Daejeon Expo, 1km)

(i) linear motor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_motor
(an electric motor that has had its stator and rotor "unrolled" so that instead of producing a torque (rotation) it produces a linear force along its length)
(ii) Daejeon

(d) MBTA loses money on all transportation modes (subway, bus, boat and commuter rail). In theother words, the state subsidizes all MBTA users who pay less than a half of the real (financial ) costs. The governments the world over will make their decisions as to whether and how much to subsidize. There are benefits that do not show up in the ledgers, namely reduced traffic congestion will save money (engines running even when stalled in highway) and time for cars.Government must do cost-benefit analysis.
