("Following the success of irs ipad1 and iPad2, which have together achieved sales of 55m units, Apple plans in Q12 to launch the iPad3 and in 3Q12 a new 7-ibch product temporally referred to as the iPad mini. The company is reportedly aiming to sell more than 100m iPads in 012, and plans to use higher-resolution IPS panels in the iPad3--Sharp is trying to produce panels for iPads at its 8G fab, hoping to develop and mass produce IGZO LCD panels for the iPad3. That said, Apple may yet decide to use flexible panels in its next iPad models, if panel makers (such as SMD can mass produce flexible AMOLED panels and improve resolution. SMD could produce only 54m AMOLED panels per year, even if its 5.5G line were fully used for tablet PC production")
(i) IPS panel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel
("IPS (In-Plane Switching technology) panel technology was developed by Hitachi in 1996 to solve the two main limitations of TN-matrices at the time: small viewing angles and low-quality color reproduction. The name In-Plane Switching comes from the crystals in the cells of the IPS panel lying always in the same plane and being always parallel to the panel’s plane")
Apple is currently using IPS technology.
(ii) IGZO is the acronym for indium gallium zinc oxide

(iii) SMD: Samsung Mobile Display
(b) WHILE in (a), please go to pages 3-5 to see who is making AMOLED.
(i) "Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) scrapped its AMOLED mass productionin Oct 2010. * * * Taiwanese player AU Optronics last year acquired a 100% stake in AFPD (subsidiary of TMD in Singapore), which has a monthly LTPS capacity of 15,000 units. Chinese firm BOE is reportedly planning to invest USD3.5b in building 5.5G AMOLED lines." pp 4-5
(b) Table 7 at page 5 shows the world AMOLED production in 2007 (the starting point of Table 7): SMD and LGD of Korea; AUO, Chimei Innolux and CMEL of Taiwan, and Sony and TMDisplay of Japan--followed by Panasonic (production started in 2009) and China's BOE (forecast to be in production in 2013.
(ii) AFPD
http://www.afpd.com.sg/
(The home page tells its milestones: Incorporated in 2001 as joint venture of Toshiba and Matsushita; in 2009 Toshiba acquired Matsushita's 40% shares; in 2010, AUO acquired 100% shares of AFPD from Toshiba)
I do not know what AFPD stands for.
(iii) LTPS: low-temperature polysilicon
(a LCD technology)
(iv) "Chi Mei EL Corporation (CMEL), is an OLED company formed in October 2004 by Chi Mei Optoelectronics, the world’s leading TFT-LCD company. Chi Mei Optoelectronics holds a 100% share in CMEL with an investment of NTD 700 million (USD 22.6 million)." |
