(an illustration)
(b) The "regulation" in "regulation sleep hours" is an adjective (not a noun) that means
"conforming to regulations : OFFICIAL"

(c) The article stated, "I was supposed to have 30 minutes a day in a roofless cell from which one could see the sky and perhaps even get a bit of sunshine. This was honored mainly in the breach."

breach (n): "a leap especially of a whale out of water"

What it meant is the author would get sunshine only if he jumped up.
(d) The author wrote, "Earlier, I had been locked in solitary for six years."

solitary (n): "solitary confinement in prison <put him in solitary>"

(e) In my posting yesterday, the Sydney Rittenberg's writing was one in the "My First Trip to China" series of Hong Kong Economic Journal.
