James T Areddy, The Shifting Terrain of Sex in China. Scene Asia, Oct 17, 2012
http://blogs.wsj.com/scene/2012/ ... in-of-sex-in-china/
(book review on Richard Burger, Behind the Red Door; Sex in China. Earnshaw Books, 2012)

Quote:

(a) Q: "Is dishonesty an important facet of the story?"
Burger: "It is, and it has to be

(b) Mr Burger says: "China remains, for all the advances, very uptight about sex. And most Chinese parents, I would say, don’t teach their kids about sex at all. And some will even tell them that they found them under a rock or on the street somewhere.

My comment:
(a) The blog states, "'No society has swung more dramatically from extreme sexual openness to prudish orthodoxy and then to the sexually ambiguous atmosphere we see at present,' writes Mr Burger."  "[E]xtreme sexual openness"?  I wonder when was that.
(b) For xiagongpeng, see prostitution in the People's Republic of China

(sectio 5 Types and venues: "Seventh tier - xiagongpeng (下工棚 'down the work shack') Women who sell sex to the transient labour force of male workers from the rural countryside")
