Rebecca MacKinnon [12] is a media specialist working in Hong Kong University.  She commented on the Grass-mud-horse (Caonima) phenomena in Chinese Internet community in a recent CNN TV report [7].  The report is nearly perfect, but I'd like to add more details for foreign people to get more insight into this phenomena.

There are many subtle details in these mockery videos[3].  The station label CJTV means 纯洁TV = pure tv, as an enantiosis of 反低俗 anti-vulgar, which was used as an excuse by the CCP government for a new wave of intensified Internet censorship.  The song was intentionally sung in children's voices[3], in accord with the "Pure TV" (as a mockery of an Internet cleaned up as the government claims) to provide a humorous contrast with the vulgar words in the lyric.

A Chinese character 囧 (jiong) [1] was placed next to the label CJTV, in place of a channel number.  This is a renewed obsolete ancient Chinese character used for a new meaning to show some subtle complex emotions [1].  In the case of Caonima, the character 囧 expresses the sadness and desperation of the people who were oppressed by the "River Crab 河蟹 (homophone as 和谐  Harmonization)".  This is why the most beloved incarnation of Caonima is with a face which looks like 囧 [2], as shown in the picture below。

Together with the Caonima toys come also a lot of details joking about the policy of CCP government.  Each toy comes with a "Permission of Birth" issued by "The Birth Planning Bureau of Divine Animals"[5].  A similar official permission is required before every Chinese baby is allowed to be delivered, thanks to the One-Child Policy.  Breeding guidelines are also provided,  one of which says "In order to raise Caonima well, don't  feed it Sanlu milk powder".  Sanlu milk powder [8] was the contaminated baby's food that killed several babies (according to CCP official reports) and caused countless babies to struggle in pain of kidney stone disease.

All these details add even more allegorical context to the series of Internet memes [4] about Caonima.  Caonima emerged as one of the 10 vulgar joking entries of "strange creatures" which were entered into the wikipedia clone website 百度百科 baike.baidu.com.  At the debut of these virtual animals, there are no clear tone to insult the Internet censorship, although the anti-vulgar campaign of the CCP government already started.  Of course these vulgar entries were removed from the website after a short period of hot exposure.

With more and more social contributions to the original idea of Caonima, Chinese netizens attributed more emotion to the story of Caonima thus it evolved into a "divine animal" that fights against the "River Crabs" which are parabolic animals of the Internet censorship, and finally defeated the River Crabs [3].

Inspired by the story of Caonima, some others created entries like "50-cent Dogs" [10] in other wikipedia style websites to insult the “Internet commentators".  “Internet commentators" were employed by the government to post messages on Internet forums to cheat the people.  It's commonly joked that the Internet commentators will get 50 cents paid by the government for each message they post on Internet forums to help the government cheat the people.

Unfortunately, some foreign reporters took the amount "50 cents" as exact numbers in the Chinese currency, but failed to observe that it's more of an insult than a solidly proven fact.  One recent example was a Swiss media report [11] which took the 50 cents amount seriously and even converted it into 5 euro cents based on the exchange rate. :)  This lent a handle to the CCP propaganda tools [11] to discredit the "western media" as biased and ridiculous.

English translation of lyric of "The Song of Grass-mud-horse":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKx1aenJK08

skippybentley
12 March 2009
According to the New York Times, "The Grass-Mud Horse" is a mythical
creature whose name in Chinese sounds like "fuck your mother". These
horses face a problem: invading river crabs that are devouring their
grassland. In spoken Chinese, river crab sounds very much like harmony,
which in Chinas cyberspace has become a synonym for censorship. Censored
bloggers often say their posts have been harmonized — a term directly
derived from President Hu Jintaos regular exhortations for Chinese
citizens to create a harmonious society.

While grass-mud horse sounds like a nasty curse in Chinese, its written
Chinese characters are completely different, and its meaning —taken
literally — is benign. Thus, the beast has dodged the Chinese
governments efforts to censor information over the Internet that is
seditious or inflammatory.

Xiao Qiang, an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of
California, Berkeley, said that the grass-mud horse is an icon of
resistance to censorship.

The genius behind the song just goes to show the oppression by the
Chinese government.

Stop oppressing your people and see how well they could flourish :) I
love you china but not the corrupt politicians who have slapped down the
expanding mind of the people. Save yourself before the citizens get to you-

Love America.

This is going to be huge, I assure you. I didn't know about China and
the "harmonizing" until I heard about this video. It's doing what it's
supposed to, raising awareness. Hopefully enough people will hear about
it to make a fuss over here in the states, or in Europe, where you live
in a real republic (or the closest thing to it).

This sound sucks. Really sucks.
The pronuciation of grass in Chinese is the same as the pronuciation of
fuck.
The pronuciation of mud in Chinese is the same as your.
The pronuciation of horse in Chinese is the same as mother.
So? the meaning of this song is mother fucker. I think any government
should prevent this kind of song to be prevalent. This song sucks.

Dude, you are definitely working for the Great Firewall. And, you're
wrong. Most governments would not censor a song. Most nations believe in
free speech.

You COMPLETELY misunderstand the point of this. It's not that they get
to fulfill their childish dreams of being allowed to curse all they
want, no, its about free speech, and showing the government they can't
control them as well as they thought.

The government doesn't have the right to censor anything, no matter how
obscene it is.

How can you be so sure of yourself? What happened was some bung-hole 13
year old was smart enough to use the political byword as a pretext to
fulfilling his childish dreams of saying whatever he wants.

Other children caught on, and then the adults saw the work of their
children as an opportunity to break out of their own oppression. Hmmm!?

But it doesn't matter what it originally meant, this shows they can
break free of censorship, and you obviously have never lived in a
country where you couldn't say what you want.

The U.S. is virtually the ONLY country in the world with a law like our
First Amendment covering freedom of speech. China certainly doesn't.

And even though this video is clearly political speech -- the kind of
speech nobody would argue is not covered by our First Amendment -- the
powers that be on You Tube will probably yank this video off due to
vulgarity.

How is that any better than China? Oh, I guess if an independent company
does it it's OK since the First Amendment doesn't apply?

That's not true. There are many societies that currently protect free
speech. Canada and Great Britain, All of the countries that make up the EU?
-----------------------------------------
dunkelfalke (1 week ago)

well, you can look at it the other way: most other countries have got
the free speech article direct in their constitutions, but americans
needed an amendment to include it.
by the way, the constitution of ussr also included an article about the
freedom of speech.

I honestly didn't know Canada and Great Britain or most other countries
had freedom of the press in their constitutions. I thought it was just
us (and the former Soviet Union).

>From the comments on Internet forums and Youtube, you can observe that activities of "50 cent Party 五毛党" - the "Internet Commentators" were apparently strenghtened.
For example, they started to accuse the Grass-mud-horse was sponsored by some external funds:

orthoepist:
The master of Grass-mud-horse appropriated funds again,
It's really difficult at the global environment of economic crisis.
The Grass-mud-horse really has high quality!
The Grass-mud-horse really has a kind and diligent intent!

This is one of the signs that the River Crabs 河蟹 has started a wave of combat and oppression against Caonima (Grass-mud-horse).

BEIJING — Since its first unheralded appearance in January on a Chinese
Web page, the grass-mud horse has become nothing less than a phenomenon.
A YouTube childrens song about the beast has drawn nearly 1.4 million
viewers. A grass-mud horse cartoon has logged a quarter million more
views. A nature documentary on its habits attracted 180,000 more. Stores
are selling grass-mud horse dolls. Chinese intellectuals are writing
treatises on the grass-mud horses social importance. The story of the
grass-mud horses struggle against the evil river crab has spread far and
wide across the Chinese online community.
Not bad for a mythical creature whose name, in Chinese, sounds very much
like an especially vile obscenity. Which is precisely the point.
The grass-mud horse is an example of something that, in Chinas
authoritarian system, passes as subversive behavior. Conceived as an
impish protest against censorship, the foul-named little horse has not
merely made government censors look ridiculous, although it has surely
done that.
It has also raised real questions about Chinas ability to stanch the
flow of information over the Internet — a project on which the Chinese
government already has expended untold riches, and written countless
software algorithms to weed deviant thought from the worlds largest
cyber-community.
Government computers scan Chinese cyberspace constantly, hunting for
words and phrases that censors have dubbed inflammatory or seditious.
When they find one, the offending blog or chat can be blocked within
minutes.

against government". They say that all the time because they are afraid
of China. Because China is going to become the greatest power of all
time in 20 years. And Chinese people are known as communists.

(Weapons of the
