www.libertytimes.com.tw/2014/new/mar/15/today-t1.htm
Mar 14, 2014
www.president.gov.tw/Default.asp ... =31922&rmid=514(Lions Clubs International)
two consecutive paragraphs:
(A) That is all in the 新聞稿, about the trade relations with New Zealand, and 鹿茸.
(B) The West does not use or eat 鹿茸 (I have not tried it), so there is no appropriate translation. Taipei Times did not report the comment then, but it now translates it this way:
Enru Lin, Protest Art; A makeshift exhibition records the development of the Sunflower Movement. Taipei Times, Mar 30, 2014
www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2014/03/30/2003586843
("They [student protestors] were inspired by the sunflower, a heliotropic plant that students adopted as a metaphor for transparency. Other early works were caricatures of President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), drawn in emperor’s clothing or with deer antlers, a reference to a moment earlier this month when Ma mistook deer antler velvet (鹿茸) for deer fur") (parentheses in original)
That is as close as one can get (about translation).
(iii) For the first time, I realize that the website of 總統府 (translated as "Office of the President" officially and as presidential palace by foreign news wire) does not have ANY transcript of the president (in Chinese or English), unlike Whitehouse.gov. Indeed the above Chinese-language press release is not translated in to English (ie, not found in the "New Releases" of the English part of the website). So I am clueless whether Mr Ma spoke in Chinese or English to the international delegation of Lions Club International.
(iv) That is why The Economist uses "antlers" in the title of an analysis. See the next posting.
(b) In the same photo (No 3, that is): "馬區長"
