Back in Taiwan, sex might well lead to a shotgun marriage. Anyway, Taiwanese
are the least into sex, according to a few world-wide scientific surveys.
So we (Taiwanese0 are VERY afriad of sex, about the same reputation
Republicans in US have (American Democrats are reportedly wild).

In 1980s, I was a graduate student at University of Illinois. I succeeded in
thesis defense, but one advisor in my thesis committee wanted me to improve
English in my thesis. I asked an American to do me a favor, but the advisor
was still not satisfied. Worse, he had not time to read it, for he was a
mere assistant professor (possibly not even on tenure track) and desperate
writing grant proposals (he soon left the university). I had had no plan to
stay, so I was stuck there. I asked a Brazilian (white) female technician (
who got her M.D. in Brazil) if she could take me in for a few nights. "Yes."
It was a studio. She slept on bed and I on a sofa. The next day, a mutual
friend (a white man who worked as a technician but hoped to enter a medical
school) came to pick her up as usual. Apparently my host did not mention in
advance my stay. He was a bit surprised to see me coming out of the building
with her, but in a fraction of a second act as if nothing unusual happened-
-and said nothing, except greetings to both of us. Embarrassed, I said to him
that I needed a place to stay. That day, she notified me matter-of-factly
that I had to find another place. I expressed gratitude and moved on.

( I do not want to say bad things behind other people's back. However back
in Taiwan, an American friend of mine, a 80-year-old lady who retired from
US, taught English in Taiwan warned that women in Latin America ballooned
after marriage. My host was not fat, but probably thanks to too much sun tan
, got skin wrinkled. While I stayed in her studio, I saw a photograph of a
young, pretty, more slender woman on a white-sand beach. She commented that
it was SHE in her teens! Even so I could not bring the two together as the
same person. But she obviously was not kidding.)
