Scott DeCarlo, Andrea D. Murphy and John J. Ray, America Largest Private Companies. Forbes, Nov. 3, 2010.

My comment:
(a) By definition, a private company does not sell stocks.
(b) In the print, one of the companies highlighted is Vizio, whose 2009 revenue was $2.47bn.
http://www.forbes.com/lists/2010/21/private-companies-10_Vizio_WJZ2.html

By comparison, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (TSMC) was $9.0bn.

Samsung vaunts being world's largest technology company. Actually there are two. Samsung is the largest by revenue.

(i) Revenue

Samsung Electronics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Electronics
(In 2009, Samsung overtook Siemens of Germany and Hewlett-Packard of the USA with a revenue of $117.4 billion to take the No.1 spot as the world's largest technology company.)

Apple Inc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc.
(Revenue  $65.23 billion (FY 2010))

Footnote 4 refers to 2010 Apple Form 10-K, which in turn points out at the top that Apple's 2010 fiscal year ended on Sept. 25, 2010. For FY 2009 and 2008 respectively, they were $42,905bn and $37,491, respectively.

(ii) market capitalization

On May 26, 2010 "Apple rides iPhone success to pass Microsoft on market capitalization.

On Sept. 23, 2010 "Apple passes PetroChina to become the second largest company by market cap"--after ExxonMobil, the latter being valued at $311 bn.
