(section 1 History)
(ii) The article maintains, "Well-known stresses in the current model [of China] are becoming more apparent, including a downturn in total factor productivity, which is the vital, unmeasurable part of economic growth resulting from technological change and institutional efficiency."

A summary about total factor productivity (TFP). TFP "cannot be measured directly. Instead it is a residual, often called the Solow residual, which accounts for effects in total output not caused by inputs."  "Robert Solow defined rising productivity as rising output with constant capital and labor input. It is a 'residual' because it is the part of growth that cannot be explained through capital accumulation or the accumulation of other traditional factors, such as land or labor."  Wikipedia in the pages of "total factor productivity " and "Solow residual."

Mr Solow (1924- ) is a professor of economics in MIT and a Nobel laureate in 1987. His landmark paper in this subject is Solow R, A Contribution to the Theory of Economic Growth. Quarterly Journal of Economics, 70: 65-94 (1956).

(iii) Take notice of "creation."  US has not MADE touchscreen--or LCD or plasma display--panels.
