My comment:
(a) The VOA report makes an error: paragraph 2 mentions "美国飞毛腿导弹."
飞毛腿导弹
Scud
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scud
("The term comes from the NATO reporting name SS-1 Scud which was attached
to the missile by Western
intelligence agencies")
* scud (vi): "to move or run swiftly especially as if driven forward <
clouds scudding across the sky>"
scud (n)

(b) The VOA report does not really say anything. But it does not point out
that US is the first and only other
nation which has shot down missiles or a failing satellite midcourse.
-----------The following are China's reports on this event. In chronological
order.
(1) 中国在境内进行陆基中段反导拦截技术试验. Xinhua, Jan. 11, 2010.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/mil/2010-01/11/content_12792325.htm
was a one-sentence statement.
(2) 邢世伟, 中国进行反导拦截技术试验 本土防御力提升. 新京报, Jan. 12, 2010.
http://www.gmw.cn/content/2010-01/12/content_1036308.htm
displayed two file photos of the 红旗-9 missile.
My comment:
(a) "On 12 January 2010, Xinhua published photos of a missile launch, which
appears to be a HQ-9 medium
and long-range air-defense system. However, it can so far not be confirmed
whether this system has been
involved in the test."

Professionals, Jan. 12, 2010.

(b) Having failed to find Xinhua pictures, I presume that Defpro.com was
erroneous in its citation of Xinhua.
It must have been 新京报. whose report fits the bill.
(c) So far, China's reports has not stated that the interceptor missile is
HQ-9.
