(1) CME Group | The Futures of Capitalism; The biggest financial exchange you have never heard of.
http://www.economist.com/news/fi ... -futures-capitalism

Chicago Mercantile Exchange
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Mercantile_Exchange
(based in Chicago; founded in 1898; merged with the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) in 2007 to become CME Group Inc; Terrence A Duffy is the president and executive chairman of the board)

My comment:
(a) The article states, "It [CME] did so largely unnoticed by the public. Tourists continue to line up outside the historic building of the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street, hoping to see the inner workings of capitalism."

Alas, I lived in Chicago for four years in 1980s. I never thought of visiting there.
(b) IntercontinentalExchange
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intercontinental_Exchange
(founded in 2000 by Jeffrey C Sprecher; Headquarters  Atlanta, Georgia)

(2) The climate of Tibet |  Pole-Land; The world’s third-largest area of ice about to undergo a systematic investigation.
http://www.economist.com/news/sc ... -undergo-systematic
("Though the amount of ice on the plateau of Tibet and its surrounding mountains, such as the Himalayas, Karakoram and Pamirs, is a lot smaller than that at the poles, it is still huge. * * * The area is known by some as Asia’s water tower, because it is the source of ten of the continent’s biggest rivers. About 1.5 billion people, in 12 countries, live in the basins of those rivers. Welcome, then, to the Earth’s 'Third Pole'”)

Note:
(a) Pamir Mountains
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamir_Mountains
(footnote 1 cites both (i) Encyclopedia Britannica 11th ed. 1911 and (ii) The Columbia Encyclopedia, 1942 ed, that pamir was Persian for "roof of the world")
(b) Karakoram  喀喇昆仑山脉
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karakoram
(including K2, the second highest peak of the world 8,611 m (28,251 ft); section 1 Name)

Compare Kunlun Mountains  昆仑山
(c) Of the ten rivers, those with Chinese names for the upper reaches are as follows (counterclock-wise from Indus River).
(i) Indus River
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indus_River
(section 1 Names and etymology: Sanskrit word Sindhu means river; became Hinduš in Old Persian; Sênggê Zangbo (藏语: 森格藏布河), lit. "Lion River" 狮泉河 in Tibetan)
(ii) Brahmaputra River
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahmaputra_River
(While most rivers on the Indian subcontinent have female names, this river has a rare male name, as it means "son of Brahma" in Sanskrit (putra means "son"); called Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan language)

For Tsangpo/ Zangbo, see Yarlung Tsangpo River
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarlung_Tsangpo_River
(The suffix Tsangpo (or Zangbo, Zangbu) denotes a river flowing from or through Tsang [or Ü-Tsang 卫藏], ie Tibet west of Lhasa)
(iii) Salween River  怒江 ("actually named after the Nu tribe that lives in the area")  Wiki
(iv) Mekong River  澜沧江

(d) In 2009 "Yao Tandong of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, in Beijing [and two foreigners] started an international programme involving these countries, called the Third Pole Environment (TPE). Last month, its fourth workshop met in Dehradun, India."
(i) 姚檀栋/ 第三极环境
(ii) Dehradun
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dehradun
(section 1 Etymology)
(e) There is no need to read the rest of the article.
